Tranexamic acid helps to prevent and reduce bleeding. It is used to control bleeding after certain surgical procedures, especially in people whose blood cannot clot properly or takes a longer time to clot.
This medicine may also be used to control bleeding in other situations such as heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding and nosebleed.
Tranexamic acid may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Take Tranexamic acid exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may take this medicine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.
Tranexamic acid is available as a tablet or capsule.
Swallow the tablet or capsule whole with a glass of water.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the type and severity of your condition.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not take Tranexamic acid if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any of its ingredients.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- have or have had a blood clot in your blood vessels
- history of fits or seizures
- trouble seeing some colours
- severe kidney disease
as Tranexamic acid may not be suitable for you.
Do not take this medicine with birth control pills containing hormones.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- irregular menstrual cycle
- blood in the urine
- untreated heart disease or blood vessel problem
- untreated disease of the blood vessels supplying the brain
- bleeding in the space that surrounds the brain
- mild to moderate kidney disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Why is it important to keep my appointments with the doctor?
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
- Routine tests (e.g. liver function, eye examination) may be done while you are being treated with this medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
- Regular monitoring of signs of allergic reactions, fits or seizures, and blood clots may also be needed.
Tranexamic acid may cause dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects include any of the following: headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, tiredness, stuffy nose, back pain, muscle cramps or spasms, and joint pain.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- signs and symptoms of allergic reaction e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swelling of the face, eyes, or mouth
- signs and symptoms of blood clot e.g. chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath; pain, swelling and tenderness in your leg accompanied by redness and warmth
- changes in eyesight, eye pain, severe eye irritation, eye inflammation
- fits or seizures
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Alert your doctor if you are taking birth control pills or other types of hormonal birth control. Ask your doctor about using non-hormonal birth control as an alternative while being treated with Tranexamic acid.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or using any of these medicines:
- oral tretinoin (medicine used for acne and blood cancer)
- medicines used to dissolve blood clots
- medicines used to help the blood form clots
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Tranexamic acid.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
